As we celebrate nearly 45 years and unveil the exciting next chapter of Michael Hill, our Design Director, Maria Then, was tasked with creating an iconic new piece that would become synonymous with our brand.

A designer take on a timeless shape
The Michael Hill brandmark is a key design element in the Signature Lock. The newly created icon intertwines our monogram of M and H: the inspiration for the padlock’s unique silhouette.
“When brought to life in three dimensions, the padlock pendant celebrates the juxtaposition of the soft curves of the M against the angularity of the H,” said Maria.
“With multiple planes, the design features angular lines at its outermost points, which sweep into concaved curves. This brings a subtle yet distinct point of difference to the timeless shape of a padlock; creating an intriguing piece that you will only find at Michael Hill,” said Maria.
An elegant reflection of our heritage and future
Our brandmark purposefully conjures imagery of a window, paying homage to the iconic, creative window displays which were designed by Lady Christine Hill in Michael Hill’s formative years, and which helped our brand to first establish itself in the fine jewellery landscape.
A celebration of our present and future, the brandmark, encapsulated in the lines of our Signature Lock, is also an elegant reflection of our heritage, our passion for craft and creativity, and of everything that Sir Michael and Lady Christine Hill first built.

The iconic Love Lock Bridge in Paris, renowned for padlocks adorning the Pont Des Arts, is just one of many global sites, from Serbia to South Korea and California, where couples place ‘love locks’, marking physical declarations of their unbreakable bonds. In a piece of fine jewellery, the padlock becomes a symbol to be worn close at all times: representing love, locked forever.
